The Speed of Disruptive Innovation

You might know that feeling when, as the CEO of a business, you wake up one morning to find that your competition has taken away all of your business. One moment you are king of your industry, and then the next moment you have lost all your clientele by one means or another. It is not always disruptive innovation causing your head to spin with its lightning speed, after all. But it is the same speed that causes disruptive innovation to be such a frightening factor, and you have to consider this if you wish to keep your business going.

But Is It Really That Fast?

It is often said of performers, especially musicians, that he or she is an “overnight success.” This causes you to think that the musician just picked up a microphone at a karaoke bar, sang a song for the first time ever, was discovered purely by accident by the top boss of a recording label, and signed up as soon as they stepped off the stage. In reality, any famous musician can tell you of the years they toiled away, earning cents on the sidewalk after playing for hours on end, and playing any gig that came their way. So, as we know, “overnight success” here means “blood, sweat, and tears success.” The real difference is that you have simply never heard of that musician before they were suddenly promoted on every radio station.

It Is The Same For Disruptive Innovation

Disruptive innovation does not happen overnight. Take, for instance, Moore’s Law. Gordon Moore observed that transistors per square inch on integrated circuits doubled every year and predicted that the same phenomenon could be the same for all technology. When you begin with 1, you will have 2 next year. No big deal, nothing to write home about. If this is a new product from a competitor, then it may not seem like a threat. But pretty soon, 2 turns into 4 and 4 turns into 8 and, before you know it, the technology has made leaps and bounds, leaving its competition in the dust. Remember, however, that it still took years to reach that level.  The risk however, is that you just didn’t see it coming in the first place.

This is great news for your business. Disruptive innovation can only catch you off-guard if you do not look out for it or, even worse, if you write it off as a non-threat.
